The 17.72 inch Rifled Muzzle loader has a barrel length of 32.65ft, of which 30.25ft are rifled and was equipped for shooting a 2000lb shell up to 8 miles. Pressure driven force produced by a steam motor was utilized to hoist and cross the Gun. It took at least 3 hours to build up the important head of steam to work the mounting however this was entirely adequate since it took a Man O'War no less than 3 hours to enter the sound of Gibraltar subsequent to being sited off the purpose of Tarifa in Spain.
It is said that amid a visit of the Inspector-General of Artillery in 1902 the Gun was set up to shoot 5 rounds at full charge. On the primary request to flame, the tube let go however that was all. After further endeavors as yet nothing happened so the fizzle drill was completed however without much of any result. Toward the end of the stipulated 30 minutes hold up, the General requested a volunteer to go down the drag and secure the shell extractor to the shot so that the Gun could be emptied. After a long interruption for thought a little thin officer ventured forward and volunteered for the undertaking. Stripped to the waist, a rope round him and the extractor prepared, he was himself "stacked" into the Gun. A couple of minutes after the fact, to everybody's help, he was pulled back securely, having finished his assignment.
